Letter to Applicants

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology at Illinois State University’s Student Counseling Services (SCS). We are pleased you are considering our site and warmly welcome your application.

As the Training Director at SCS, I’m honored to be part of a team that is deeply committed to cultivating the next generation of thoughtful, reflective, and socially responsive psychologists. I bring to this role a background in clinical training, a deep respect for developmental learning, and a strong passion for integrating equity, diversity, inclusion, and access (EDI-A) into every layer of our program. Internship is a pivotal year, and I consider it a privilege to walk alongside our trainees as they continue shaping their professional identities with clarity, purpose, and care.

For the 2025–2026 academic year, we will offer four full-time, 12-month internship positions. Our selection process follows the APPIC Internship Matching Program and utilizes the AAPI Online application system. The internship year begins August 1, 2025, and concludes July 31, 2026.

We adhere strictly to APPIC guidelines and fully honor the policy that no individual at our training site will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from applicants at any point during the selection process. Our goal is to select candidates whose professional goals and values align closely with the training experiences we provide.

Interns receive a full-time annual stipend of no less than $38,868, with monthly compensation ranging from $3,000 to $3,239. In addition to excellent training, interns receive benefits associated with Administrative/Professional employee status, including access to university facilities and services, medical/dental/vision insurance, and a fully computerized office equipped with LAN, internet access, and built-in audio/visual capabilities.

Our internship program is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association through 2027. We are proud of our 50+ year history of training and the vibrant learning community we’ve built. If, after reviewing our program, you find that your interests and values align with what we offer, we warmly encourage you to apply.

If you would like additional information, please feel free to contact me at (309) 438-3655 or tmnguy1@ilstu.edu. You may also find it helpful to speak with current or former interns as part of your decision-making process. I look forward to learning more about you through your application and wish you all the best in your journey ahead.

Thanh Nguyen, Psy.D.
