Peer Mental Health Ambassadors
Redbirds Supporting Redbirds
Peer Mental Health Ambassadors are paid student leaders within Student Counseling Services who are passionate about supporting the well-being of fellow Redbirds. Through peer support, outreach, and mental health education, ambassadors help foster a campus culture where students feel connected, supported, and empowered to seek help when needed.
By providing approachable, student-to-student support, Peer Mental Health Ambassadors play an important role in expanding awareness of mental health resources and promoting overall well-being at Illinois State University.
- Why it matters: Students often feel more comfortable talking with another student who understands the college experience.
What Ambassadors Do
Peer Mental Health Ambassadors provide supportive, non-clinical conversations through scheduled Peer Support Drop-ins held across campus. They listen with empathy, offer encouragement, and help students navigate everyday challenges while connecting them with campus resources when additional support may be beneficial.
Ambassadors also:
- Facilitate workshops and presentations
- Participate in campus outreach events
- Contribute to digital mental health campaigns
- Increase awareness of campus resources
- Promote resilience and reduce stigma around seeking help
Training & Professional Development
Before serving in their role, ambassadors complete comprehensive training that prepares them to confidently support their peers.
Training includes:
- Mental health literacy
- Active listening and supportive communication
- Cultural humility
- Crisis awareness
- Ethical boundaries
- Campus referral procedures
Throughout the academic year, ambassadors receive ongoing supervision and professional development to strengthen their skills and ensure they provide effective, responsible peer support.
